Understanding and supporting community climate action groups. Evidence from north east Scotland

Report March 2026

This report explores the activities, impacts, and challenges of community groups within the North East Scotland Climate Action Network (NESCAN). It focuses on the experiences of groups working across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire who are addressing topics such as climate change through locally led community-based action.

The findings presented here draw on evidence gathered through a series of online and in-person group mapping exercises conducted in 2025. These sessions provided opportunities for community groups to reflect collectively on their work and its impact, share experiences, and discuss the role NESCAN Hub plays in supporting them.

The purpose of this report is to:

  • Identify and describe the range of activities being undertaken by community groups within the network.
  • Explore the role of NESCAN Hub in supporting these groups, including the types of support provided and how this support is experienced.
  • Examine the benefits of NESCAN membership for individual groups and for the wider regional landscape of community-led climate action.
  • Highlight opportunities for future development, including areas where support, coordination or resources could be strengthened.
  • Provide recommendations for NESCAN Hub which could strength the impact and sustainability of the community groups it supports.

By bringing together the perspectives of community groups themselves, this report provides an evidence-based understanding of how community-led climate action is currently being delivered across the network, the benefits of these activities, and the important role of the NESCAN Hub in enabling this work.
