Our message
Terms such as the ‘fuel poor’, ‘energy vulnerable’ or ‘hard to reach’ individualise the causes and ignore the systemic drivers of Home Energy Injustices (HEI).
Instead, using language like Home Energy Injustices points to their underpinning social and economic factors. Changing the way HEI are framed helps move away from treating the symptoms, towards treating the cause.
The language and definitions we use must speak to the unequal power relations that drive energy injustices in the home. Energy equity recognises that people may need to be treated differently, according to their needs.
We are convening a Delphi study to co-produce definition of energy equity and its scope.
