Overview

Join us online to explore how racialised disadvantages affect people’s ability to use and access the energy system.

Limited attention has been paid to how racialised disadvantages impact the ways in which people are able to use energy, interact with energy infrastructures and access the energy system. This webinar will share insights from recent research that sheds light on racially disadvantaged people’s diverse energy practices and experiences of energy deprivation, drawing attention to the divergences from normative assumptions about ‘typical low-carbon energy users’ and the processes within the energy system that might perpetuate disadvantages. This webinar will be relevant to anyone interested in approaches to practicing and sustaining anti-racist principles in energy research, advocating for a more equitable energy system, and its implications for social justice in our paths to decarbonise.

Speakers:

Dr Manon Burbidge is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Manchester. Her PhD looked at the drivers and experiences of energy deprivation and wider social inequalities amongst refugee communities living in England, whilst her broader research interests span energy, housing, justice, gender, migration and climate change. She also worked as a Research Associate on EU-funded projects on energy poverty, renewable energy access and energy communities prior to starting her PhD.

Uttara Narayan is pursuing her PhD in human geography as part of the dual-award programme between the University of Manchester and University of Melbourne. Her current research is attempting to understand residential decarbonisation inequalities amidst tenure insecurity in England. Previously, Uttara has held positions at the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford and the World Resources Institute. She will be presenting the work she conducted during her time as Researcher, Racial Justice and Energy Demand while at ECI.
